Suunto Ambit2 R tested and reviewed by Tristan Haskins for Heartratemonitor.co.uk

Update > In October 2016 Suunto released their new Suunto Spartan Sport GPS multisport watch. If you want the latest and greatest offering from Suunto, then please check the review of the Spartan Sport here. Please note. I still hold this Ambit2 R in high esteem and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good GPS runners watch with a USB CABLED data connection to PC/Mac only. That’s the main difference, the lack of connectivity between the watch and your smartphone. This model does NOT support Bluetooth upload and neither does it provide smartphone notifications etc.

Release Date (UK) > Jan 2014

Product it replaced > Suunto T5

Suggested Retail Price (when new) > £299 with HRM strap

Replaced by > Suunto Ambit3 Run (March 2015) then the Suunto Spartan Sport (Oct 2016)

Summary Review : The Ambit2 R was designed to enhance your running experience. Providing accurate speed and distance readings thanks to Suunto’s clever FusedSpeed™ technology a combination of GPS and accelerometer information sent from your wrist. The Ambit2 R also measures your running cadence from your wrist, giving you strides per minute.

With the Ambit2 R you can plan your own moves or even download a complete training prlan from the free online service at Movescount.com. You’ll even get reminded about your daily targets, target completion. Added to that are some essential GPS navigation features like track back giving you the freedom to explore new trails without the fear of getting lost.

Our full review of the Ambit2 R will be live very soon. In the meantime, if you’d like to check the latest prices

Next model UP

The model up from this one is the Suunto Ambit 2S with MULTISPORT functionality. If you do NOT want multisport but would like to improve the navigational functionality and add a barometric pressure sensor, weather warning etc then please consider the Suunto Ambit2 or Ambit2 Sapphire

PLEASE NOTE > the Ambit2 range was replaced with the Ambit3 range in 2015 and then again by the Suunto Spartan range in late 2016. The Ambit3 range includes Smartphone support enabling direct link between the wrist unit and an iOs or Android device running the Movescount APP. This is a useful new feature, however, if you’re not too tied to your smartphone you might want to grab a bargain with the Ambit2 versions as the prices have been dramatically reduced. Please follow these links to directly compare prices of Ambit2 R and Ambit3 Run.

Next model DOWN

This is Suunto’s entry level GPS sports watch. The predecessor to this was the ORIGINAL Ambit which was more focused on general outdoors and not specifically on runners functionality.

Should you still buy one now?

I would buy either the Suunto Ambit3 Run or something like the Polar M200 or Garmin Forerunner 35 for runners looking for built-in GPS plus convenient wrist based heart rate. For more serious exercisers / runners I’d recommend the Garmin Forerunner 230 or Polar M400 with chest strap HRM and built-in GPS. All of these watches are supported by brilliant smartphone apps and websites.

Garmin Forerunner 35  user friendly, competent GPS running watch with wrist based HR

Polar M200  a more basic GPS running watch with wrist based HR & activity tracker

Polar M400  a more technical GPS running watch with chest strap HR, activity tracker & 5 x HR zones

Garmin Forerunner 230  another technical GPS running watch (VO2 etc) with chest strap HR
